What do we know personally about Prince Charles, heir apparent to British throne ? Frankly, nothing. But when we were young, and he was also young, newspapers carried amusing stories of his exploits, which also tickled our funny bone here in India.
For instance, when the British Navy decided to get “familiar” with him by taking off his pants on a fixed date, he outsmarted them by wearing layers of umpteenth underpants. Although eight hefty naval personnel were selected before the ceremony to manhandle and subdue the Prince, and they did manage to throw him down on the hard deck – not gently – the former had invented complicated rope knots for his underpants strings. The officer appointed to take off his pants left the scene with hands upraised in disappointment and helplessness. He and his team could not untie the knots in allotted time, the newspaper reports said.
Then one witnessed his grief and tears shed publicly for his beloved Princess Diana. Nobody could reach through TV screens and put a consoling hand on his royal shoulders.
Now the news has come that he has invited Mr Laxmi Mittal, Mukesh Ambani and Ratan Tata, famous Indian industrialists, to spend a few days with him at Buckingham Palace as his personal guests. The other invitees are : Ms Shabana Azmi, actress and social activist, and her husband Mr Javed Akhtar, writer and lyricist.
In the past Mr Malkeet Singh, Bhangra exponent, Ms Shilpa Shetty, actress, and restaurateur Raj Rana were the guests of honour at the palace.
Another happy news for the Indians from the palace is that the Prince will start marketing his organic products branded Duchy Originals by the end of this year. Prince's Bhoomi Vardaan Foundation in Punjab has already started working on. the project.
What is not clear is whether this mouthful Hindi nomenclature was selected by the Prince himself or is an attempt to let the Indian Tricolour flag flutter in front of British Union Jack ?
